zinnia florals – flowers i love, flowers to dream about, flowers i've played with, creative ideas with flowers skip to content search for: zinnia florals flowers i love, flowers to dream about, flowers i've played with, creative ideas with flowers home about me find me gallery green posted on march 1, 2018 by maureen mccarthy-koth green, grün, verde, vert, and more having a bit of a love affair with green these days…saying good bye to my home in washington state has had a lot to do with my emerging green heart [holding onto evergreen]. i can’t seem to take my eyes off the shades of green around me. i’m almost shocked by the vibrant darkness, the luxurious kiwi, the cucumber coolness of green. on my way down to ocean park wa to stay at our favorite klipsan beach cottages, green was practically shouting its way into my head… green verging on black in the marsh areas that dot this landscape…new shoot green on so many trees, the sun sparkling off those branches bouncing back into the meadows and marshes that border the sea in those areas. i’ve been racking my brains as to why the green seems so dominant…sheesh maureen there is green everywhere it’s spring for goodness sake…and you live in washington the evergreen state… i painted my kitchen green…i labored over the color until it became the warm containing shade that stayed on those walls for many years…what drew me to this green? some thoughts below green is a beginning… so many new shoots emerge from the soil and are recognized because they are a vibrant contrast to the darkness of the soil. green announces new growth green is tender and new… even the metaphor “a greenhorn” refers to someone new and without experience. i have found that being new and without deep down experience of a place, situation or person can bring unexpected information, wisdom or insight … green is constant…when the flowers fade, most likely the green will remain if not forever for a good portion of forever. green is the chalice nature offers to flowers… the green leaves of a plant cupping around the various delicious colors that flowers offer to the plantscape. green is a canopy. often flowers hide under the cool green shelter of green leaves green is enough an arrangement made entirely of the greens found in your garden is sufficient even more than sufficient made this with my dear friend ruth while visiting at her delicious house in portland, oregon. a quick trip into your backyard or nearest park would show you that. in the church green is often the color of ordinary time…it is the frame work that holds the rest of the year together “ordinary time is the longest liturgical season, and green plant dyes would have been one of the most widely available kinds of dyes. the color brings to mind the tender, new shoots of spring and the lush grasses and summer crops that sustained animals and people throughout the year. this leads naturally to seeing green as a sign of hope and life”. http://www.uscatholic.org/articles/201701/why-do-priests-wear-green-ordinary-time-30900 i guess that word “sustain” is what draws me over and over to green. it is a color that sustains me giving rest for the eyes and a promise of more to come… peace and grace maureen save save save save save save save save the secret garden posted on september 1, 2017 by maureen mccarthy-koth “the secret garden was what mary called it when she was thinking of it. she liked the name, and she liked still more the feeling that when its beautiful old walls shut her in no one knew where she was. it seemed almost like being shut out of the world in some fairy place. the few books she had read and liked had been fairy-story books, and she had read of secret gardens in some of the stories. sometimes people went to sleep in them for a hundred years, which she had thought must be rather stupid. she had no intention of going to sleep, and, in fact, she was becoming wider awake every day which passed at misselthwaite.” ― frances hodgson burnett , the secret garden one of my absolutely favorite books and movies is the secret garden by frances hodgson burnett. it’s almost mythic the way in which i remember that story. watching the original movie and then the 1990’s version as well feels like a kind of a dream, mostly a good one with a bit of delicious scary tossed in. i love how the main character is a cranky, edgy little girl who seeks her own place in the world…i’m delighted that she doesn’t resist the invitation into a garden… she is bold enough to trust somehow even when she feels a great deal of trepidation…and her hope that the garden can be transformed is tender and fierce… the thing about mary’s secret garden is that she didn’t step into a finished work…a completed, really “pretty” spot. she opened the door to a real mess! something neglected and sad…it seemed to mirror the state of her heart. what was so lovely for me as i read or watched the movie was the journey she experienced from that neglected sad place to the contented joy of her own secret garden. it was if her heart grew as she tended her garden. i’ve often found the to be the case. as i began to think about mary’s secret garden, i came across these words from anne lamott: “if my heart were a garden, it would be in bloom with roses and wrinkly indian poppies and wild flowers. there would be two unmarked tracts of scorched earth, and scattered headstones covered with weeds and ivy and moss, a functioning compost pile, great tangles of blackberry bushes, and some piles of trash i’ve meant to haul away for years. ” i love this! making space for the beauty and the mess. as i “battle” with two big labs for some space in our new garden, i am finding i need to allow for the mess they may make and find ways to grow beauty in the midst of their running and tumbling through flower beds. it has not been easy, mind you, but this morning as i was sweeping away dirt they had strewn all over the side walk and telling my newly planted coral bells, cone flower and joe pye plants that it would be ok. i would care for them even in the disruption, i realized that my fighting was of no good use…my surrender might be a better path. what would it look like for me to accept that their crashing through my garden is ok and there is space for the “scorched earth” and “piles of trash” anne lamott writes about? or in my case two bumbling dogs. that said i often find myself dreaming about my perfect secret garden … walls are a must. i favor stacked rock or a brick wall…hedges of fragrant shrubs… another good choice. a garden door would be delightful. there is something lovely about inviting others through a door. it would be a delicious shade of green. some kind of plan or design is needed…i tend to love the way plants spill over each other, self sow and generally wander through the world but i also know that a skeleton shape or plan can help to reveal their best qualities as they companion with other plants. seating… also so necessary. i want to be able to sink into a spot and feel as if i too was part of the landscape. i’ve found that settling into a few particular spots can give you a deeper perspective on your surroundings. this bench is found in the garden of one of my favorite spots, klipsan beach cottages in washington state. that secret garden is my ideal…but the one that leaves space for rambunctious dogs and a pile of compost and some tools left lying around…that’s the real one… i wonder what your real “secret garden” contains? is there space for “scorched earth” and “piles of trash” as well as the lovelies you choose to grow? peace maureen save save save save garden flowered posted on july 28, 2017 by maureen mccarthy-koth yesterday was the 4th of july…i found myself at the home of a friend…sitting in her kitchen, she mentioned that her daughter would be hosting a dinner at her home. she asked if i would be willing to create a few flower arrangements. i was surprised but not shocked at the way my heart and soul leapt at the opportunit
